What are Essential Oils?
What are Essential Oils and do they work are two very common questions we are asked at Simply Nuna™. Over the last few years, Essential Oils such as Eucalyptus Oil and Lavender Oil have taken the world by storm, but what is all the hype?
What are Essential Oils?
Essential Oils are often used as alternative medicine referred to as Aromatherapy. Plain and simple, Essential Oils are the compounds extracted by distillation from plants, trees, fruits, and herbs. When the oil is extracted it traps the scent and flavor giving each essential oil its own unique characteristics. The distillation process varies from each raw material and can be either steam distilled or cold pressed.
Essential Oils, known for their abundance of healing properties, can interact with the body in a number of ways. When applied to the skin topically, some of the chemicals from the oils are absorbed into the body. Certain methods of application are considered more effective than others. Two of the most common methods are applying topically to the skin or inhaling.
What are Essential Oils Good for?
Essential Oils are most commonly used in various products found on the market today such as shampoos, perfumes, skincare, candles, and aromatherapy products, however, there are different forms of essential oils and purity levels, and often times many mass marketed products are made with synthetic essential oils. Synthetic Essential Oils are man-made from chemicals (sometimes Natural chemicals) that when combined, make an identical smell that resembles a Pure Oil.
Topical application is done by blending essential oils to a carrier oil and rolling them onto the skin with a special applicator called a rollerball. This method helps to protect the skin from the potency of the oils and allows for a larger surface area of the oil to be applied so that it can effectively absorb into the bloodstream.
The inhalation of essential oils can stimulate different areas of the brains Limbic System which plays a huge roll in the emotional well-being of the body as well as long term memory. Forming memories based on smell can effectively trigger certain emotional attachments to things such as places or people.
The Limbic System also plays a large roll in controlling bodily functions such as heart rate, Blood pressure, and breathing. Many products found on the market such as vapor rubs are infused with essential oils. Vapor rubs are generally infused with Eucalyptus Oil, Lavender Oil and/or Peppermint Oil to help aid in a more restful sleep when you are sick.

Pro Tip: 100% Pure Essential Oils are commonly used in Aromatherapy and are substantially more expensive than synthetic man made essential oils. Often times companies will use the term "Natural Pure Essential Oils" which are still man-made Essential oils, made with "Natural" chemicals. Do your research. Not all Aromatherapy companies follow good sourcing practices and often use marketing terms to make consumers believe their products to be safe.
